   Edit: as you can see from my second photo, the nut inside that holds everything together is starting to get rust pits. This is very disappointing because the unit is advertised as being made from stainless steel so this metal part should be made from stainless steel too. When something rusts, it expands and since the shell is made from plastic, the rusting screw might crack it. I wonder how long before it’s so rusted it either falls apart or cannot be unscrewed. Original review: I used plumbers putty instead of the rubber gasket because I’m old fashioned and I wanted a tight finished look in the sink bottom. However, since this is a “shell” design, you technically would not need putty or the gasket. That is because any water that gets under the flange goes right into the shell of the unit, which is self-contained and open to the drain. So instead of the water seal being in the bottom of the sink under the flange, the actual water seal is underneath the sink where the shell of this unit makes contact to the underside of the sink. As far as the design, it’s great… this deep basket catches everything very well. As far as the shell, leaks are less likely, but I believe you might get crud or slime buildup inside the shell. The shell is hollow between the inside metal pieces and the outside plastic pieces. Gravity takes water down, but if crud or slime decides to stay inside that shell and grow, nothing would be able to stop it or flush it out. You would have to take it apart and manually clean.

   Purchased to go with my Kraus workstation apron front granite sink. My old Kraus sink in my last kitchen came with this basket strainer, and it was the absolute best kitchen sink strainer drain. Such a good design! Washed well, handled piles of water, tea, icecubes, food bits. Caught everything so it didnt go down my pipes. Was easy to scrub clean and never dented or cracked. Never came loose. Excellent drain assembly for a kitchen sink.

   My new Kraus apronfront sink had the option of very beautiful, and matching black colour, Kraus strainer drain assembly, but it doesnt have the useful basket design that catches all the food particles!! Function beats pure aesthetics, every single time, so I ordered this steel basket strainer instead.

   The last one looked great and worked great with 6 years of heavy daily use ( the Kraus granite sink as well) and I am looking forward to many years without issue of this basket strainer drain on my new Kraus sink in my new house.

   this one is superb to the original Kraus basket. original was plastic and very, very horribly made. Original cost me the entire kitchen sink cabinet because it leaked since day one and ruined my cabinet. This one was cheaper and installed way easier, has yet to leak after 2 months.

   Basket is deeper and easier to remove. Overall I would recommend.

   My disposal died and I am so glad it did (it was disgusting) so that I could replace it with the Kraus BST-1. It looks and functions fabulously. The metal sink hole insert, basket and top are all stainless finish, not shiny like chrome. I had purchased a used/like new unit from krausoutlet.com but it did not have the basket or top. I called Kraus US phone and they answered right away, were very patient and informative and sent the replacement basket and top as a courtesy so that I did not have to send the other back to krausoutlet.com. For the convenience of contacting by phone, I would purchase a Kraus rather than the other similar products through other companies, plus it appears that they offer a longer warranty. One thing that may be helpful is that during installation, the black rubber gasket fits into the plastic base with the ridge side up (the ridge is the side that contacts with the bottom of the sink). Also, the screw was plenty long for my porcelain sink but I had to improvise a tool to screw it in since it needs an unusually wide flat head screw driver..I had no problems with water draining through or backing up with the basket.

   This is a must have for any kitchen. This is super easy to use the large basket collects all your debris so it doesn’t run down the drain. I’m not one that wants a garbage disposal. They usually have an odor this eliminates that issue don’t put in the garbage disposal.

   I use this to help collect the debris. This is a top-notch quality use the added cover when you want to hold water in the sink. It has a good water retention and we’ll stay there till you’re ready to release it.

   This is very sturdy. I had my first one for eight years with no issue at all. We just opted to get another new one with a new sink. This is a great value for the money. I’ll have one of these on my sink always

   My contractor came back and saw the house after he built. It couldn’t believe what a great idea this was. Get one for your kitchen sink. It’s very easy to install or to have a plumber install you won’t be sorry.

   Easy to install, I was able to do it myself without having to go out and buy anything or know a whole lot about plumbing. It works great for us, catches all the items that fall into the sink, and we can just dump whatever is in the basket into compost. Love it, didn’t realize how much we needed it until we got it 🙂

   I got this because it’s the only one I saw from Krause. I bought a composite sink for $50 at a bin store. This completed it. I saw someone mention it didn’t fit composite, but this did. It requires quite a bit of downward pressure to meet the threaded sleeve, but it’s possible. Once it catches, it spins tightly. You won’t get the full nut depth, but better than half, which seems good enough. Tight seal everywhere, but I’ve not installed it yet to test for water tightness.

    I have really come to like and prefer Kraus products, so it was not a huge surprise that I found this drain assembly to also be a great buy. The stainless steel is top-notch, and the installation instructions were simple and super-easy to follow. I called up their tech support to ask whether or not I should use plumber’s putty or silicone, and a very nice fellow named Jerry told me to just use the foam ring provided. I did and the seal is nice and dry underneath after I tested it out by filling the sink with a few inches of water with the stopper in place and leaving it overnight.

    I enjoyed this deep drain while it lasted. Unfortunately, after less than a year of use ( but more than a year after purchase since it wasn’t immediately installed) the metal screw at the bottom deteriorated and fell apart necessitating a visit from a plumber and a replacement with the stock drain he had on his truck. I wouldn’t recommend this product. I’ve never had anything like that happen before and believe it was due to faulty materials. Expensive to replace!
